Menstrual vocabulary

How do you feel when you think about the mord “menstruation” ?

If you are feeling a little discomfort, you are not alone! In our society it is quite normal to feel a bit unpleasant when menstruation is mentioned, and this is a consequence of something being a taboo topic.

Now there are many ways we can avoid a word menstruation, and yet still talk about womans monthly bleeding or natural cycle! Since menstruation is hard to talk about in many sites of the word, most languages will have some sort of “cover up” word for it.

In english, we have quite a few examples :

Aunt Flo

On the Rag

Lady Business

That Time of the Month

or if you want a bit of a negative note: Shark week

With these words, we can  quite clearly communicate about menstruation without using explicit language.

Now lets do a quick exercise – what are those “cover up words” in your language??

You can comment that below 🙂

But is that really what we want or need?

In our opinion – No, definitely not!

Why is that? Because by not talking directly or openly about something, we are also sending a signal! A bad one! When using any of previously mentioned slang words, we are communicating that menstruation or menstrual cycles are something that should not be talked about.

We are not using the proper words, we are also sciently saying that “ this s a forbidden topic and must not be uttered out in public or anywhere else!

And this si how our language is still fueling the menstruation taboo!

So since you are here, lets see what you can do about this! How can you make life of woman of future generations much more comfortable and much lest restricted as it is today?

We recommend by actually using a word menstruation or menstrual cycle when talking about anything connected with monthly bleeding!

Then we come to a expression “period”, which is probably the most used when talking about menstruation, and we believe this is completely OK to use as well!

So in short, be cautious of the words you use, because they also say a lot more than just the meaning they have! And when talking about womans reproductive cycles, try using a few expressions that we bolded out in this post, because they are completely fine to use and the best thing of all, they do not “cover up” the reality of a situation, but are simply more classy and elegant ways of saying “menstruation” !
